U.S. Senator-Elect Kay Hagan: Victory Speech

U.S. Senator-Elect Kay Hagan’s Remarks as Prepared
November 4, 2008
Greensboro, NC

Thank you! Thank you! Before I get started … does anyone have a new pair of shoes? Ruby Red ones maybe? Because I just gave mine away…

What a difference a year makes! A little over a year ago when I got into the race, the press, the pundits, other politicians were all ready to write this race off and hand Elizabeth Dole the keys to her office for another 6 years.

But it’s not her office — and we knew better.

What we were able to accomplish in a little more than a year is a testament to how hungry people are for a change. So much has gone off course over the last 8 years, and it’s going to take all of us — working together — to get it turned around again.

But first I want to take a moment and thank my family behind me, particularly my brothers and their families, Chip’s brothers, his father, “The General” Charlie Hagan, my father Joe and my mother Judy. They have been a constant sounding board and source of encouragement.

I want to thank all the extended Ruthven, Hagan, Chiles and Carter families for traveling near and far to celebrate this victory.

And to my children, Jeanette, Tilden and Carrie. They traveled across the state endlessly, putting their lives and their schooling on hold to help elect me. Every mother loves to brag on her kids, but the stories that I heard from people who had met them as they were attending events always made me one proud mama!

And of course to my husband Chip, the best husband any woman could ask for. No one has been a bigger supporter, a bigger cheerleader or a better partner in this journey. I could not have done any of this without his humor, his perspective and his love.

And I’ve said it countless times over the last year, but Chip made the difference in this election. It’s nice to have a husband that can vote for you!

And to my staff — led by the unflappable Crystal King, who put together a team as talented as they are funny as they are hardworking. I would not be here today without each and every member of my staff here in Greensboro and across the state. Let’s have a round of applause for all of them!

And last, but certainly not least, a huge thank you to all of you, and all of the North Carolinians who got behind my campaign: door-knocking, phone-banking, blogging, joining Ruby Red Slippers Decorating parties, hosting me in your communities, and of course, voting for me. You were the difference between winning and losing and you are the reason why our campaign was so successful. I am humbled and honored by the faith you have put in me.

To the North Carolinians who didn’t vote for me…I’m going to be working hard the next 6 years to earn your vote.

Because Democrat, Republican, or Independent — the ideas we need to create good-paying jobs and turn our economy around won’t have a party label. And if you have an idea that works for North Carolina, my door is always open.

I love our state. And as I’ve travelled it over this campaign, the people of North Carolina have been an inspiration.

And from Murphy to Manteo, they all want the same thing. No one wants a handout — they just want leadership that listens, and a government that doesn’t stand in their way, but gives them a chance to make their own way.

This campaign saw some tough personal attacks, but throughout it all the thing that kept me going was my belief that North Carolina cares the most about the issues. That message was sent from working families, seniors, students, Democrats, Independents and Republicans. And tonight, Washington received that message loud and clear: Stop the partisan bickering, work together, and get started fixing thing — now.

Standing up here tonight isn’t the end of the campaign — it’s the beginning of our fight to bring real change to Washington, the kind of change that will make a difference here in North Carolina.

Tax breaks should go to businesses creating American jobs, not corporations sending them overseas.

Our energy policy should create jobs and end our dependence on foreign oil, not reward Big Oil companies with billions in tax breaks while we borrow from China to pay for Saudi Arabian oil.

And we must remember that whenever our economy has struggled, small businesses and the middle class have been the engine that’s pulled us free – and they’re the ones that need the help!

We face real challenges, but those are the values that will guide me as your U.S. Senator.

And as I thank you tonight for your support, I’m also asking for your help. Democrat, Republican, or Independent — get involved in your community: volunteer at your church, in your kids’ schools, or for our veterans.

The challenges we face are real, and changing Washington is just the start. It will take all of us, working together at all levels across North Carolina, to create the kind of lasting change we want to see in this country.

But tonight is a night to celebrate!

Thank you for your faith in our campaign! Thank you for your hard work! And thank you for all that we’ll do together!

Thank you!

God bless you.

Kay Hagan: Your Vote

It’s not too late to turn this country back around.

When we started this campaign more than a year ago, the pundits counted us out. They said we wouldn’t stand a chance against a senator with deep Washington connections and near-universal name recognition. But I knew I could always count on people like you.

You are sick and tired of politics as usual — high on rhetoric, low on results. You want a senator who votes for your best interests, not the special interests. You want new ideas, fresh leadership and a new way of doing business in Washington. You know we can change things, but we have to get there first!

If you give me the privilege of serving as your next U.S. senator, I’ll stand up for you every day of the year and always remember the reason I decided to run.

I chose to run for my family — for my kids, for their future children. I was concerned that the world their children, my grandchildren, will inherit will be in worse shape than the world I inherited from my mom, Jeanette and my dad, Joe.

With your help we can change the politics of this country and accomplish great things. We can get our economy moving and get our country back on track.

I ask you to stand up for me today — and hold me accountable in the future. I ask you today for your vote.

With warm regards,

72 Hours to Go: Calling and Knocking for Kay!

It’s incredible. Over the past week, our phones have been off the hook and offices filled to capacity.

Volunteers from across the state are getting on the phones and knocking on doors, talking to voters for Kay.

They are doing it because they know Kay Hagan will be the fresh voice North Carolina needs in the United States Senate. We can’t afford six more years of George W. Bush’s failed policies represented by Elizabeth Dole. She’s been a Bush rubber-stamp in the U.S. Senate, ineffective for North Carolina and absent from our state.

Don’t take our word for it — newspapers across North Carolina agree. Kay Hagan has received every single newspaper endorsement in this race, commending her for her record in the state Senate, and her plans in the U.S. Senate.

We have less than 72 hours to go until the polls close — 72 hours to elect a U.S. senator who will finally stand up for you.

Will you take a stand for Kay and volunteer today?

Kay Hagan Files Suit

Download the lawsuit filing.

GREENSBORO, NC- Kay Hagan filed a lawsuit against Elizabeth Dole and the Elizabeth Dole Committee, Inc., after Dole declined to remove her new television ad, described by North Carolina newspapers as “indecent,” a “gross misrepresentation,” “dishonest,” and “beyond the bounds of acceptable political disagreement.”

“Like her time in the U.S. Senate, Elizabeth Dole has made her choices here, and that’s her decision,” said Hagan Campaign Communications Director Colleen Flanagan said. “But it’s equally our decision not to allow someone to slander Kay Hagan, impugn her character, her convictions and her faith, without any consequences. Elizabeth Dole would love nothing more than to distract from the issues and her record for the last 5 days of the campaign. In filing this suit, we’ve made clear that these kind of despicable tactics will not be tolerated, and our campaign is moving forward with the most important task at hand: defeating Elizabeth Dole, and giving North Carolina’s families a voice in the U.S. Senate that they’ve been sorely missing.”

Papers across the state, as well as fellow Republicans, have condemned Elizabeth Dole’s tactics over the last 24 hours.

CHARLOTTE OBSERVER: “This is indecent. It is the modern-day version of the “white hands” ad, a lie born of Dole’s desperation in a race in which she has trailed for weeks. It is also a deliberate attempt by Dole’s campaign not just to distort the truth, but to shatter Hagan’s admirable record as an elder for more than a decade in Greensboro’s First Presbyterian Church, as a Sunday School teacher and a volunteer in her church’s fundraising campaigns, worship services and community service programs… It has no place in N.C. politics. Unless she admits this egregious, shameful mistake and acts appropriately, Elizabeth Dole has no place in N.C. politics, either.”

ASHEVILLE CITIZEN-TIMES: “The ad is not only a gross misrepresentation of the circumstances surrounding the fundraiser, the implication that Kay Hagan believes “there is no God” flies in the face of her long and close involvement with First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, where she is an elder and has taught Sunday School.”

GREENSBORO NEWS-RECORD: “If Elizabeth Dole is still the gracious person North Carolinians have admired for many years, she’ll pull her new attack ad off the air. It’s worse than dishonest in its depiction of rival Kay Hagan as a “Godless American.”… Even in a campaign long ago driven down in tone by Democrats and Republicans, this is a low blow. Making false insinuations about a candidate’s religious beliefs is beyond the bounds of acceptable political disagreement.”

FAYETTEVILLE OBSERVER: The paper called Dole’s attacks on Kay, “desperation” and saying they “understand Dole’s desperation. The polls show she’s trailing Hagan, and she’s dipping into her own pocket to support her campaign. But jumping into the deep end of the slime pool is no way to catch up.”

Kay released a new television ad earlier today that directly addresses her Christian faith and Dole’s desperate tactics. The ad can be seen at www.kayhagan.com.

###

BACKGROUND: Kay Hagan has filed a lawsuit against Elizabeth Dole and the Elizabeth Dole Committee, Inc. that outlines the nature of the complaint and informs the court that she will be seeking damages. After the suit was filed, the Wake County Clerk of Superior Court issued an order allowing us to file our formal complaint within 20 days.

Kay Hagan: "This kind of politics will not be tolerated"

Kay Hagan sent the following email to supporters today:

Friend —

Elizabeth Dole should be absolutely ashamed of herself. I can’t begin to tell you how outraged I am that she has attacked my Christian faith.

Her latest ad is fabricated and pathetic.

Our nation is in a crisis and the only solution Elizabeth Dole has to offer is mud and slime and more of the same. Wall Street was just bailed out and our economy is in shambles and Dole is doing whatever she can to talk about anything BUT the issues.

Enough. This kind of politics will not be tolerated.

Help me respond by paying for an ad directly addressing these claims attacking my Christian faith.

We already have two response ads — watch them — and please donate $100, $50 or $25 to help me directly respond to Dole’s desperate, divisive and deplorable ads in a third ad.

I don’t know what things were like when she grew up in North Carolina, but the North Carolina I raised my children in would never condone this kind of personal slander.

I was raised going to Sunday school and church every week and I raised my children that way. The Hagan family has attended the First Presbyterian Church for over 100 years — that’s where I’ve taught Sunday school.

If Senator Dole wants to pass judgment on my faith, that’s her right — but that’s not the kind of response MY faith teaches.

Join me in taking a stand against the same old tired rhetoric that divides people by contributing today.

Your support at this critical time is imperative to our success.

But even more so — your support right now is imperative to change the politics of our country.

We need a new direction — leadership that will bring people together, not tear people apart. Leadership that offers new solutions, not the same old, tired rhetoric.

The people of North Carolina have had enough. No more. It’s about time for a change.

Yours in the fight,
Kay
