Kay on CNN's The Situation Room
Yesterday CNN’s The Situation Room aired a segment on the state of the North Carolina Senate race:
Kay Receives Sixth Newspaper Endorsement
Kay Hagan has received every newspaper endorsement in this race. Six daily newspapers agree, Kay Hagan is the best choice for North Carolina.
Wilmington Star News Editorial: Kay Hagan for U.S. Senate
October 21, 2008Owning a house in Salisbury doesn’t make one a resident of North Carolina. For all practical purposes, Republican Elizabeth Dole has not lived in her home state in several decades.
Nor in her six years as a U.S. senator has she spent much time here. But her absenteeism is less significant than the real problem.
Simply put: She’s not doing her job, which is to represent the people of North Carolina.
Her Democratic challenger, Kay Hagan, seems poised to take on that task.
Hagan, by contrast, has been an active state senator, although certainly not a household name, before her decision to challenge Dole. She has ample budget-writing experience and a strong record. The independent N.C. Center for Public Policy Research ranked her in the top 10 most effective senators in 2007.
In her 10 years, she rose to the ranks of leadership to become one of the Senate’s primary budget writers and deal-makers. She helped push for a $3 billion bond issue to fund the state’s public schools, universities and community colleges. Washington is a lot different from Raleigh, but a knowledgeable, energetic and assertive politician such as Hagan can provide strong representation.

Hagan Internal Polling Memo
Click here to download a memo prepared by pollsters Anzalone-Liszt Research on behalf of Kay Hagan’s U.S. Senate Campaign.
Among their key findings:
• Hagan has weathered a barrage of attacks from Dole and third parties, and is in excellent position to win against an incumbent whose support measures have plummeted, and who struggles to break 40% of the vote.
• Dole’s support measures fell sharply in late summer, and have now stagnated in dangerous territory.
• Dole’s popularity rating is approximately 1:1 (46% favorable / 45% favorable), and her job rating is now net-negative (42% positive / 49% negative).

New TV Ad: “Lowering”
The Kay Hagan campaign has unveiled a new television ad titled “Lowering”
The ad began airing across North Carolina last night. “Lowering” compares Kay’s record of fiscal accountability, lower taxes and balanced budgets with the Bush-Dole team’s record of financial recklessness and advocating for the special interests, resulting in a $700 billion bailout at the expense of working families.
Kay Hagan: Thank you
Cross-posted at BlueNC
I wanted to take this moment to thank everyone in the online community for your hard work, dedication, and support. With 29 days to go, I am working as hard as I can to win this race, and I know you are, too.
It is not just the fundraising — although I do have to say, when I heard you raised $183,592.47 online in 144 hours for our campaign, I was thrilled. More important, though, I am impressed with how you are taking your energy online and turning it into action in our offices, on the phones and at the doors.
I have been traveling to our field offices across the state thanking our staff and volunteers for all their hard work. These are some of the events I look forward to the most.
There is nothing better than the sight of a group of volunteers armed with clipboards ready to go door- to-door for a cause they believe in. And who would have thought the sound of dozens of competing voices on the phones in a cramped office would sound so good?
As I visit each of our offices, I am keeping an eye on the progress of the Yellow Brick Road. If you’ve seen it, you’ll know what I am talking about — more on this below.
It started months ago when, in a speech, I told the audience I wanted to give Liddy Dole a pair of Ruby Red Slippers so she could click her heels three times and go home to Kansas with Bob!
They loved it.
Since then, the Ruby Red Slippers have become something of a tag line for our campaign. North Carolinians have been holding Ruby Red Slipper Decorating Parties, highlighting the issues they care about that Elizabeth Dole has neglected in the U.S. Senate. In our offices, our volunteers sign a yellow brick to add to our Yellow Brick Roads hanging up on our walls. Elizabeth Dole even came up to me a few months ago to tell me she was a size 8.5 medium!
In all seriousness, I have been amazed by the energy on this campaign. Thousands of you looking for a change in Washington have invested your energy, money and time in this campaign online — from donating, signing up to volunteer, emailing your friends about the race and even becoming a friend on Facebook.
But I know you’re not doing this for me — I’m not doing this for me. We’re doing this together for the future of our country.
We simply cannot afford to continue walking down the same path we have walked on under the Bush-Dole team.
Our economy is on the brink but Elizabeth Dole has been too busy putting Washington’s special interests ahead of North Carolina’s best interests. Pushing for the deregulation of the banking industry is not in our best interest.
Voting to give Big Oil and Gas $17 billion in tax breaks is not in our best interest.
Spending only 13% of her time since being elected – and in 2006, just a paltry 13 days – in North Carolina is not in our best interest.
We can’t allow Elizabeth Dole to continue George Bush’s failed policies and legacy.
We need a new direction, and a new path. And over these next 29 days I hope you will help us create that path — one yellow brick at a time.
Greensboro News & Record: “She can become an outstanding U.S. senator”
Over the past few months, North Carolinians have gotten to know Kay Hagan — mother of three, proud wife of a Vietnam veteran, accomplished businesswoman and an effective leader in Raleigh.
Kay has stood up for North Carolina’s working families in the state Senate for a decade. Now as more people learn about Kay, the more they realize “she can become an outstanding U.S. senator.” The Greensboro News & Record agrees.
See below for some excerpts from today’s papers to see for yourself:

Editorial: Hagan’s Track Record Recommends Election (10/5/08)> Read the entire editorial here. For years, Kay Hagan has been Guilford County’s go-to state senator in Raleigh. Smart, energetic and well-connected, she’s drawn high ratings for effectiveness…
Hagan, 55, has worked vigorously on behalf of Greensboro interests as well, while becoming a leader in forging statewide spending priorities. What she has done in Raleigh, she’s ready to do in Washington. She deserves election to the U.S. Senate seat held by Elizabeth Dole, 72…
Hagan, if elected, may be exactly the right replacement. She’s responsive to constituents, communicates well, works hard, comprehends complex issues, makes good decisions and is not content to be average. She can become an outstanding U.S. senator. With appreciation for Dole’s service, voters should give Hagan the chance to take her talents to Washington.

Hagan known for energy, involvement (10/5/08)> Read the entire article here.
By Jim MorrillKay Hagan already knows the ups and downs of the U.S. Senate.
During a Capitol internship in the mid-‘70s, she operated the bronze elevator that ferried senators to and from the chamber. Squeezing inside were members such as Ted Kennedy, Joe Biden and her uncle, Lawton Chiles of Florida.
At the controls, the senator’s niece daydreamed about a political career of her own.
“You aspire to it,” she says. “It’s infectious.”
Now the Greensboro Democrat wants to return to Washington.
Hagan, 55, is challenging Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole in one of the country’s highest-profile contests…
Hagan, once little-known outside Greensboro and Raleigh, is running hard.
Genetically energetic, she’s an exercise junkie who loves yoga and Pilates and early-morning runs. She was a middle-school cheerleader, president of a high school service club, a lifeguard, piano student and ballet dancer who once led 300 costumed dancers through the streets of Disney World. As a civic activist in Greensboro and later state senator, she juggled committee meetings with soccer games and Girl Scouts…
“The campaign in that sense is a projection of who she is and her style,” says Sen. Dan Clodfelter, a Charlotte Democrat. “It’s a very high-energy campaign.”…
Like the crowded Senate elevators, she likes to pack a lot in.“I like to get a lot done in one day,” she says. “But I also like to have a good time doing it.”
Kay Hagan: One month to go, here's how we win
We only have one month to go until Election Day. Here is how we do it together:
1. Register to vote! Register and tell your friends to register at www.voteforchange.com.
The registration deadline is October 10th. You can still register and vote via One-Stop Early Voting from 10/16 to 11/1. However, you cannot register on Election Day.
2. Join our team! Attend an Early Vote Convention near you on October 11th by visiting http://www.kayhagan.com/action/conventions.
Our campaign will be launching Early Vote Conventions across the state to get you involved in reaching out to other members of your community to vote. Visit the website to find a location near you.
3. Get involved! Sign up to volunteer at www.kayhagan.com/volunteer.
Cannot attend an Early Vote Convention? We need as many people as possible to knock on doors and call voters in your community. Visit our website to sign up and an organizer will get back to you with volunteer opportunities in your area.
4. Help at home! Write a letter to the editor or email a friend at www.kayhagan.com/action.
You can still help our campaign at home. Send a letter to the editor or email your friends and family about my race by visiting our website.
5. Vote for change!
We are in a position to win this race — but I need your help on the ground.
Elizabeth Dole has been spending too much time standing up for Washington’s special interests. And spending just thirteen days in North Carolina in one calendar year, and only 13% of her time in the state since being elected is not in North Carolina’s best interests.
I pledge to advocate on your behalf, every day, every week, every month and every year.
Will you advocate for me over these next 31 days?
