Kay Hagan: Thank you

I wanted to take this moment to thank everyone in the online community for your hard work, dedication, and support. With 29 days to go, I am working as hard as I can to win this race, and I know you are, too.
It is not just the fundraising — although I do have to say, when I heard you raised $183,592.47 online in 144 hours for our campaign, I was thrilled. More important, though, I am impressed with how you are taking your energy online and turning it into action in our offices, on the phones and at the doors.
I have been traveling to our field offices across the state thanking our staff and volunteers for all their hard work. These are some of the events I look forward to the most.
There is nothing better than the sight of a group of volunteers armed with clipboards ready to go door- to-door for a cause they believe in. And who would have thought the sound of dozens of competing voices on the phones in a cramped office would sound so good?
As I visit each of our offices, I am keeping an eye on the progress of the Yellow Brick Road. If you’ve seen it, you’ll know what I am talking about — more on this below.
It started months ago when, in a speech, I told the audience I wanted to give Liddy Dole a pair of Ruby Red Slippers so she could click her heels three times and go home to Kansas with Bob!
They loved it.
Since then, the Ruby Red Slippers have become something of a tag line for our campaign. North Carolinians have been holding Ruby Red Slipper Decorating Parties, highlighting the issues they care about that Elizabeth Dole has neglected in the U.S. Senate. In our offices, our volunteers sign a yellow brick to add to our Yellow Brick Roads hanging up on our walls. Elizabeth Dole even came up to me a few months ago to tell me she was a size 8.5 medium!
In all seriousness, I have been amazed by the energy on this campaign. Thousands of you looking for a change in Washington have invested your energy, money and time in this campaign online — from donating, signing up to volunteer, emailing your friends about the race and even becoming a friend on Facebook.
But I know you’re not doing this for me — I’m not doing this for me. We’re doing this together for the future of our country.
We simply cannot afford to continue walking down the same path we have walked on under the Bush-Dole team.
Our economy is on the brink but Elizabeth Dole has been too busy putting Washington’s special interests ahead of North Carolina’s best interests. Pushing for the deregulation of the banking industry is not in our best interest.
Voting to give Big Oil and Gas $17 billion in tax breaks is not in our best interest.
Spending only 13% of her time since being elected – and in 2006, just a paltry 13 days – in North Carolina is not in our best interest.
We can’t allow Elizabeth Dole to continue George Bush’s failed policies and legacy.
We need a new direction, and a new path. And over these next 29 days I hope you will help us create that path — one yellow brick at a time.
