Kay Receives Sixth Newspaper Endorsement
Kay Hagan has received every newspaper endorsement in this race. Six daily newspapers agree, Kay Hagan is the best choice for North Carolina.
Wilmington Star News Editorial: Kay Hagan for U.S. Senate
October 21, 2008Owning a house in Salisbury doesn’t make one a resident of North Carolina. For all practical purposes, Republican Elizabeth Dole has not lived in her home state in several decades.
Nor in her six years as a U.S. senator has she spent much time here. But her absenteeism is less significant than the real problem.
Simply put: She’s not doing her job, which is to represent the people of North Carolina.
Her Democratic challenger, Kay Hagan, seems poised to take on that task.
Hagan, by contrast, has been an active state senator, although certainly not a household name, before her decision to challenge Dole. She has ample budget-writing experience and a strong record. The independent N.C. Center for Public Policy Research ranked her in the top 10 most effective senators in 2007.
In her 10 years, she rose to the ranks of leadership to become one of the Senate’s primary budget writers and deal-makers. She helped push for a $3 billion bond issue to fund the state’s public schools, universities and community colleges. Washington is a lot different from Raleigh, but a knowledgeable, energetic and assertive politician such as Hagan can provide strong representation.
