RALEIGH, N.C. – State Sen. Kay Hagan has won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate and will challenge incumbent GOP Sen. Elizabeth Dole in November.
With 19 percent of precincts reporting, Hagan had 61 percent of the vote compared to 19 percent for Chapel Hill entrepreneur Jim Neal.
Lumberton attorney Marcus Williams had 12 percent of support while Lexington trucker Duskin Lassiter and Moncure podiatrist Howard Staley each had 4 percent.
Hagan had a heavy lead in fundraising and support from Democratic party leaders during her campaign. She raised about $1.5 million and purchased a series of statewide television ads to boost her name recognition.
Dole easily cruised to a victory in the Republican primary to defeat Pete Di Lauro of Weldon. She won 90 percent of the vote with 21 percent of precincts reporting.
