Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Kay Hagan hit the campaign trail down Main Street on Tuesday guided by two enthusiastic Tarboro natives, Bernice Pitt and Betty Temple, an old friend the family.

“I love to meet all these people, and I love Tarboro,” Hagan said after more than an hour of meeting people in downtown stores and shaking hands on the street. “I am coming to meet people, instead of people coming to see me, in a grassroots campaign.”

“She has been very effective in the state senate and she can be just as effective for us in the national senate,” said Oppie Jordan who met Hagan in front of Town Hall.

Hagan, who has served five terms in the state Senate representnig Greensboro, said she feels Washington, D.C. is broken, and needs new leadership. She was voted one of the top most effective N.C. senators for the past three years.

She worked with Nations Bank for 10 years after graduation from Wake Forest Law School and has chaired the state Senate Budget Committee.

“I want to work on the U.S. economy and budget,” she said. “I worry about the future of our children.”

Hagan, 53, cited her concern with the $11 billion a month currently spent on the war in Iraq, and said the U.S. needs to end the War in a responsible fashion.

Recently, Hagan declined a debate invitation with opponent Jim Neal because all of the Democratic candidates were not invited. A total of five candidates are in the Democrat primary. The winner will face Republican Elizabeth Dole in the Nov. 4 General Election.

“They paid their filing fee,” she said. “They deserve to be invited as well.”

Flashing a big smile, Hagan asked for voters to choose her in the May 6 Primary Election.

“I’m approachable and a hard worker,” she said. “I am also pragmatic and a problem-solver. I see a problem, figure out what to do, and then take action and get results.”
