Fayetteville Observer: Senate hopeful talks with vets in Fayetteville

Fayetteville Observer
August 18, 2008

Kay Hagan, the Democratic candidate for North Carolina’s U.S. Senate seat, says the federal government should take better care of veterans.

Hagan made a campaign stop in Fayetteville this afternoon, speaking at the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 46 on Johnson Street.

Hagan, a state senator from Greensboro, is challenging Republican incumbent Elizabeth Dole.

Hagan was in town to hold her fifth town hall-style meeting on veterans issues since June. About 25 people attended.

A few spoke about their difficulties in getting medical benefits as a veteran. Hagan jotted down notes on a legal pad.

“You’re in good company,” she said. “We are hearing these problems all across the state.”

Hagan said the federal government should make Veterans Affairs spending mandatory — like Social Security — and not discretionary funding that can be subject to political pressures year to year. She also said both parties should set aside partisan differences to improve the veteran care.
