State Sen. Kay Hagan is scheduled as keynote speaker Thursday at the Craven County Democratic Party’s third annual Kathleen Orringer Awards Dinner.
Hagan won the May 6 primary election to become the N.C. Democratic Party’s candidate facing Republican U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole in the general election in November.
State Sen. Walter Dalton is also scheduled to speak at the 7 p.m. dinner at the Flame Banquet Hall on Neuse Boulevard in New Bern. Dalton is the party’s choice for lieutenant governor and will face Republican state Sen. Robert Pittenger in November.
Rep. William L. Wainwright, N.C. House speaker pro tempore, will receive the Kathleen Orringer Leadership Award, which is named for a longtime Craven County elections director and civic leader.
Wright is a presiding elder of the AME Zion Church from Havelock and is a nine- term representative now serving N.C. House District 12 including parts of Craven and Lenoir Counties. He is chairman of the house Finance Committee, is vice chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, and sits on other committees.
A special presentation of the Governor’s Long Leaf Pine Award is scheduled to be made by state Rep. Alice Underhill to former Vanceboro Mayor Jimmie Morris.
Morris, who is ill, has been a community leader active as a charter member of the Craven County Committee of 100 and Craven County Economic Development Commission and as chairman of the Craven Regional Medical Center Authority. He served three decades as mayor of Vanceboro..
Other award recipients include Barbara Harrison, as Democrat of the Year, and Jim Sugg, as recipient of the Chairman Award.
Prior to the dinner, Hagan will be the special guest at a reception at the home of Dr. Jim Congleton. Everyone is invited to attend by making reservations with Betty Wood at 638-3932 or Rachel Parnell at 514-2198. Reception tickets are $50 each and dinner tickets are $50 each. Attendance at both events is $75 per person.
