Charlotte Observer: Hagan Easily Wins Dem Contest for U.S. Senate
Hagan, one of the state’s chief budget writers, said Dole is beatable and that she’s well-positioned to do it. “I truly think that everything is broken, from the economy to the war in Iraq, to immigration,” said Hagan, 54, a Greensboro lawyer who has served in the N.C. Senate since 1999. “She (Dole) has voted with President Bush 92 percent of the time, 100 percent of the time on the Iraqi War. Our veterans are hurting; I think the military is stretched so thin we’ve got to end this war. Right now it’s not making America any safer.”

Kay Hagan strode up Market Street, quickly passed a row of television trucks and popped up the steps of the Old Guilford County Courthouse. “We did it,” said the newly minted Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate as she walked through the courthouse doors, flanked by campaign staff, her husband, parents and children. By about 9 p.m., The Associated Press had called the race for Hagan, with incomplete and unofficial returns showing her with a 3-1 voter advantage over her closest rival.

Kay Hagan celebrated her victory in Tuesday’s U.S. Senate primary with an invitation. The state senator from Greensboro, who moves from an easy primary win to what promises to be a grueling general election matchup against incumbent GOP Sen. Elizabeth Dole, implored supporters of former rival Jim Neal to join her ranks. “I want to invite them to come on board, and I certainly need their support,” Hagan said.

The North Carolina Republican will face State Sen. Kay Hagan of Greensboro this November marking the first Senate race between two women in North Carolina. With only partial returns from 34 of the state’s 100 counties reported Tuesday evening, Hagan had 61.3 percent (or 329,897) of the votes cast in the Democratic primary. Jim Neal, a Chapel Hill corporate investment adviser ranked second among five Democratic candidates with 19.96 percent (107,426) of the early votes.

State Sen. Kay Hagan has won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate and will challenge incumbent GOP Sen. Elizabeth Dole in November. With 19 percent of precincts reporting, Hagan had 61 percent of the vote compared to 19 percent for Chapel Hill entrepreneur Jim Neal.

WSPA: History Made in NC Senate Race
History was made tonight in the US Senate race in North Carolina. Two women will run for the seat in November. State Representative Kay Hagen easily won the Democratic race for Senate, while incumbent Elizabeth Dole garnered close to 90 percent of the vote. Dole was the first female to win that seat in state history.
