Hagan Campaign to Dole: You Can't Have It Both Ways, Wants President Bush to Protect the Same Coral Reefs She Wants To Drill into for More Oil
July 3, 2008
GREENSBORO, NC- Elizabeth Dole’s campaign this week touted the letter she sent to President Bush asking him to protect the deep sea coral wilderness off the coast of North Carolina, designating it as a marine monument. Dole wrote that the corals may contain “new biomedical breakthroughs” urging its protection because it “cannot be replaced once disturbed and damaged.”
Last week, Elizabeth Dole’s campaign touted the bill she cosponsored which would allow drilling off the coast of states, including North Carolina, where part of the deep sea coral wilderness is located.
Today, the Charlotte Observer’s Bruce Henderson wrote that the corals off of North Carolina’s coast, “could potentially be damaged by...

Hagan on 62,000 Jobs Lost: Middle-Class Cannot Afford More of the Same Policies, Politics from Washington
July 3, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. – State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) today released this statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its June jobs report showing a net loss of 62,000 jobs.
“Today’s report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics is a sobering reminder of the very reason we need new leadership in Washington. 62,000 more jobs were lost and our nation’s unemployment rate stayed at a record high of 5.5 percent – no wonder middle class families feel as though the American dream is moving further out of their reach. Even those people who have a job may feel the pinch in this economy, with their wages and hours cut to enable businesses to stay in the black.

Hagan on 44th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act: A Watershed Moment for Our Country
July 2, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. – State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) released the following statement today, in honor of the 44th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act.
“The passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 was a watershed moment for our country, and an integral piece of our nation’s history. Residents of my city, Greensboro, are reminded of this historic struggle on a daily basis when they pass the iconic Woolworth’s where the first sit-ins were staged in 1960 by students at North Carolina A & T. I am running for the seat previously held by Senator Jesse Helms, who opposed the Civil Rights Act. It’s clear how far we’ve come, but we still have further to go.
“Last...

Hagan on Medicare Reimbursement: Why Isn't Congress Proactively Planning Wisely, Budgeting Soundly, Looking Longer-Term?
July 1, 2008
GREENSBORO, NC- State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) today urged Congress to come up with a solution to ensure that a 10 percent cut in reimbursements for doctors who care for Medicare patients is not realized when Medicare begins processing these claims in two weeks.
“While I’m pleased that doctors won’t be faced with a 10 percent cut in their reimbursement rate in the next two weeks, this delay in reimbursement cuts is only temporary. It’s incumbent upon those in Congress to act immediately to ensure that these vital caregivers aren’t forced to pay for the government’s mismanagement and poor use of funds. We need new leadership in Washington which knows how to cut wasteful spending and...

Dole's Decision To Drill Off The Coast in North Carolina Helps Big Oil; Hurts Consumers, State Tourism, Military
June 27, 2008
GREENSBORO, NC – Again choosing her millionaire friends at Big Oil and Gas companies over North Carolina families, Elizabeth Dole committed a classic flip-flop yesterday when she voiced her support for drilling off the coast of North Carolina, which would do nothing to decrease record high gas prices in the short-term, and would actually serve to increase the record profits oil companies are currently realizing. Previously voicing concern for North Carolina’s military presence off the coast, and the state’s environment and tourism industry, Dole cast those concerns aside for an election year ploy championed by George Bush and John McCain.
“Elizabeth Dole has continued to do Big Oil and Gas’s bidding at every turn, to...

June 27, 2008
GREENSBORO, NC – Women for Kay in Johnston and Cabarrus Counties gathered last night for Ruby Red Slippers Decorating Parties in their communities. The Johnston County party took place in Clayton at the home of Sarah Anderson, and the Cabarrus County event was held at the Stowe-Away restaurant in Concord. Throughout the campaign, Kay has said she wants to give Elizabeth Dole a pair of Ruby Red Slippers so she can click her heels three times and go back to Kansas with her husband, Bob. The slippers these women decorated highlighted an issue they feel Elizabeth Dole has neglected during her time in the U.S. Senate.
Last night’s parties were the second and third events of their kind. Women for Kay in Haywood County have...

Hagan on Supreme Court Ruling Regarding Washington, D.C. Gun Ban
June 26, 2008
GREENSBORO, NC- State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) today praised the Supreme Court’s decision striking down Washington, D.C.’s gun ban, which was passed in 1976. Parker v. District of Columbia was overturned today in a 5-to-4 vote.
“I am a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights, and this ruling in favor of protecting those rights is the correct one. My children received lifelong hunting licenses when they were born, and hunting has been a favorite pastime of our family. Responsible gun ownership is not only part of the fabric of my state, but it is also a fundamental Constitutional right. This ruling is a victory for all law-abiding citizens and gun owners in this country, and I pledge to...

State Senator Kay Hagan on 64th Anniversary of the GI Bill: Opened a Window of Opportunity for Countless Veterans
“Sixty-four years ago today, our government passed the Montgomery G.I. Bill into law and opened a window of opportunity for countless veterans. At a crucial turning point in our country’s history, this landmark piece of legislation set a precedent for how America should take care of its veterans. The G.I. Bill holds a special meaning for my family, as my husband Chip, a Vietnam veteran, used it to attend law school. I am pleased Senator Webb’s measure to expand the GI Bill for the 21st Century has been included in legislation passed by Congress – I truly hope this measure is sent to and signed by President Bush to afford our brave veterans the services and programs they so rightly deserve.”

Hagan Campaign to Dole: Actions Speak Louder Than Words
June 19, 2008
GREENSBORO, NC- In a complete about-face, Elizabeth Dole’s campaign said yesterday she was in favor of ending tax incentives to Big Oil and Gas and instead reinvest those funds into renewable energy. “We need to stop the 13 billion dollars in incentives to big oil and gas companies. We’ve got to stop that. But we’ve got to use those funds instead and invest them into renewable energies,” read a statement from her campaign to Raleigh-based WTVD.
This is a dramatic shift from Senator Dole’s long-held position, which has included voting to give Big Oil and Gas those billions of dollars in incentives just last week and against investments in renewable energy just two days ago. The...

Statement of State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan on Juneteenth
“As I travel across the state of North Carolina, I have seen that the ways of the past are still evident in the conditions of people’s lives today. But there is a change that is sweeping this nation. While the seat I’m running for was once held by Jesse Helms, who opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act, I am proud to be running a campaign that is about taking the lessons learned from the past and using them to make a stronger future for us all. Juneteenth celebrates emancipation by lifting up and emphasizing two things I believe are essential to making a nation great and its people prosper —education and economic advancement. I look forward to working on behalf of North Carolinians who believe, as I do, that we need new leadership in Washington to provide a better future for our...

Elizabeth Dole Still Doesn't Get It: We Should Be Doing More, Not Less, To Help Working Families Succeed
June 17, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Squandering yet another opportunity to side with working families over special interests, Elizabeth Dole today voted against sensible tax cuts and investments in renewable energy that would help spur our economy and wean the United States off of its dependence on foreign oil.
“Last week Elizabeth Dole sided with Big Oil, wealthy offshore hedge fund managers and multinational corporations, and when she had the chance to at least try to pretend she was advocating on behalf of working families, she chose to side with the special interests yet again,” said State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford). “My question, and the question I get from the people I talk to when I’m traveling...
