$3 Million Loan to Dole Campaign Shows Lack of Support, Energy for Re-Election
October 21, 2008
GREENSBORO, NC- Kay Hagan’s U.S. Senate Campaign released the following statement today in response to the news that Elizabeth Dole had to loan her campaign $3 million in October, to try and help combat sinking poll numbers, tepid support, and a lackluster campaign. In this election cycle, Elizabeth Dole and her supporters are outspending Kay and her supporters on television, radio, mail and robocalls. In addition, more than half of Dole’s fundraising has come from out-of-state, compared with less than a quarter of Kay’s money coming from out-of-state contributions. In recent public polls, Kay is ahead of Dole, leading in the last poll by seven points, outside the margin of error.
“It’s peculiar that Elizabeth Dole has been railing against others trying to buy this Senate seat, when in essence, that’s just what she tried to do with this $3 million personal injection into her sinking campaign,” said Hagan Campaign Communications Director Colleen Flanagan. “Her campaign can spin this any way they want, but the facts are these: Kay has stayed competitive with Dole in fundraising since she entered this race; Dole and her supporters have outspent Kay and her supporters; and Elizabeth Dole is still losing. $3 million over the next two weeks will surely buy a lot of despicable, deceitful and desperate television ads against Kay, but it can’t buy Elizabeth Dole North Carolinians’ support, and that’s what will count on Election Day.”
