Does Elizabeth Dole Endorse Indicted Senator Ted Stevens' Candidacy? Dole Still Sitting on $11K in Contributions from Stevens
September 25, 2008
GREENSBORO, NC- As Republican Vice Presidential Nominee Sarah Palin of Alaska refuses to endorse indicted Alaska Senator Ted Stevens’ re-election bid, North Carolina Senator Elizabeth Dole has refused to donate, or give to charity, the remaining $11,000 in campaign contributions she received from Stevens’ PAC and campaign committee.
When asked whether she would endorse Stevens’ candidacy, Palin responded, “Ted Stevens’ trial started a couple of days ago. We’ll see where that goes.” Dole, who has remained quiet about Stevens since his indictment in late July, has repeatedly ignored or refused calls to dump the remaining money she received from Stevens, which she herself has acknowledged as dirty.
“I think it’s fair to say that North Carolinians have had enough of this kind of Washington corruption,” Hagan Communications Director Colleen Flanagan said. “Indicted Senator Ted Stevens’ trial is happening while the economy is melting down because the Bush Administration – with help from Elizabeth Dole – allowed the special interests to run wild at the expense of working families. Even her own party’s Vice Presidential candidate knows not to touch Ted Stevens with a 10-foot pole. Elizabeth Dole’s silence on the issue is deafening, and we can only assume that her decision to keep his dirty money is akin to an endorsement of his tactics and values, a corroboration that he’s done nothing wrong.”
