Hagan: Consequences of Our Lack of Energy Policy Evident in Charlotte, Western North Carolina Gas Shortage
September 25, 2008
GREENSBORO, NC- “The very real consequences of our country’s lack of an energy policy are evident in Charlotte and western North Carolina’s gas shortages. Waiting until after there is a problem to solve it is illustrative of the lack of leadership from Washington. We need to increase production, which includes the construction of new refineries, so that one tropical storm hitting rigs thousands of miles away and several days ago doesn’t disrupt the supply to this magnitude. But we also must invest in the production of renewable fuels locally and encourage people to purchase more fuel efficient vehicles. I spoke with Governor Easley yesterday, and he is ensuring more gas makes its way to the western part of our state. When I go to Washington, ensuring our country has a sensible, secure and safe energy policy will be a top priority.”
