Hagan Continues "Best Interests, Not the Special Interests Tour"; Unrolls Education Plan: "Stronger Schools, Successful Students"
September 1, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. – State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) will continue her “Best Interests, Not the Special Interests” tour this week with a focus on her plan promoting “Stronger Schools, Successful Students.” On Tuesday, Kay will tour Colfax Elementary School with Principal Michelle Thigpen and the President of the Guilford County Association of Educators, Mark Jewell. Colfax Elementary School exceeded North Carolina Growth Standards but failed the federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) accountability standards set by the federal government, due to the rigidity with which No Child Left Behind is implemented. During the tour, Kay will speak with teachers and administrators about how the guidelines have impacted their ability to teach students holistically. A roundtable to continue the conversation will follow the tour.
