Hagan Hosts Second Veterans Town Hall in Cary: "We owe it to our veterans to keep our promises"

July 1, 2008

GREENSBORO, NC – State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) hosted her second Veterans Town Hall today in Cary. The event provided a chance for Kay to hear more about the issues veterans face on a daily basis. It was Kay’s second town hall of its kind, following her first one in Greensboro. Kay comes from a strong military family – her father-in-law is a retired two-star general; her brother and father served in the military; her husband, Chip, is a Vietnam veteran who used the GI Bill to help attend law school; and she has two nephews on active duty. Kay has made veterans’ issues a priority during her campaign.

“When I hear firsthand about the poor care our veterans receive, I am reminded that Washington is broken,” said Kay. “They deserve the best America has to offer, and we owe it to our veterans to keep our promises – promises like timely and accessible health care, a commitment to mental health and a first rate education. I would like to thank all of the veterans I met today for coming out and sharing their stories with me, and I look forward to meeting even more veterans from all across North Carolina to learn about how I can help fight for them once I get to Washington.”

William “Cleve” Cox, a World War II veteran from Cary, and former chairman of the North Carolina State Veterans’ Affairs Commission said, “I commend Kay for holding these Veterans Town Hall meetings. In the six years since Kay’s opponent has been in office, I haven’t heard much from her about veterans issues. I have been a strong advocate for veterans and I believe Kay will be a strong advocate for veterans, as well.”

Kay will be touring the state hosting more Veterans Town Halls throughout the summer.
