Hagan on 44th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act: A Watershed Moment for Our Country
July 2, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. – State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) released the following statement today, in honor of the 44th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act.
“The passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 was a watershed moment for our country, and an integral piece of our nation’s history. Residents of my city, Greensboro, are reminded of this historic struggle on a daily basis when they pass the iconic Woolworth’s where the first sit-ins were staged in 1960 by students at North Carolina A & T. I am running for the seat previously held by Senator Jesse Helms, who opposed the Civil Rights Act. It’s clear how far we’ve come, but we still have further to go.
“Last month, I was fortunate enough to celebrate Juneteenth in Salisbury, and today is another important anniversary in our nation’s struggle for racial equality. As we remember the importance of the Civil Rights Act and the significant protections it afforded us and the step it took us toward equality, I am inspired to continue campaigning for modern day civil rights such as affordable health care, economic security, and educational opportunities and access for all.”
