Hagan on 62,000 Jobs Lost: Middle-Class Cannot Afford More of the Same Policies, Politics from Washington
July 3, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. – State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) today released this statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its June jobs report showing a net loss of 62,000 jobs.
“Today’s report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics is a sobering reminder of the very reason we need new leadership in Washington. 62,000 more jobs were lost and our nation’s unemployment rate stayed at a record high of 5.5 percent – no wonder middle class families feel as though the American dream is moving further out of their reach. Even those people who have a job may feel the pinch in this economy, with their wages and hours cut to enable businesses to stay in the black.
“We need leadership in Washington who knows we need to do more to help middle class families, not hinder them. Throughout the campaign, I have talked to hardworking middle class families who simply cannot afford more of the same policies and politics from Washington. I will fight for a sound energy policy to help middle class families who are currently paying upwards of $4 per gallon for gas, and I will fight for affordable education, health care and a balanced budget. My record in the North Carolina Senate shows that I am committed to making principled decisions that benefit hardworking families, and I will continue that once I am in Washington.”
