Hagan on New Unemployment Numbers: A Sobering Reminder Why Leadership in Washington is in Desperate Need of Replacement

GREENSBORO, NC- State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) released the following statement after it was announced that our nation’s unemployment rate has dramatically increase from April to May, rising a full one-half percent. 49,000 people lost their jobs in May, and payrolls have decreased every month this year.

“The news today that the unemployment rate in May has spiked to 5.5%, a full half-percent higher than it was in April, is a sobering reminder of all the reasons why Washington is broken and why our current leadership there is in desperate need of replacement. Instead of wearing rose-colored glasses, Bush Republicans like Elizabeth Dole should acknowledge the great strain working families are under and help them succeed instead of watch them struggle.

“Dole’s vote on Monday against a budget that would have provided $340 million in tax breaks for the middle class and reinvest funds into clean, green jobs that can’t be outsourced speaks volumes. It’s no wonder she received an “F” for her work on behalf of working families. While she may remain quiet on this staggering new unemployment figure — and all of the other issues North Carolina families are struggling with — I pledge to run this campaign, and work as your next U.S. Senator, on behalf of the people who are struggling to get ahead.” ###
