Hagan on New Unemployment Numbers: Americans Deserve Better Leadership
September 5, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. – State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) today released the following statement after the federal government released the news that the unemployment rate had risen to 6.1 percent in August after a loss of 84,000 jobs.“The federal government announced today that our country’s unemployment rate jumped to 6.1 percent in the month of August – the highest unemployment rate we have seen in five years. In one month, the economy lost 84,000 jobs. That is 84,000 Americans who find themselves out of work, but continue to face rising health care costs, exorbitant gas and food prices and a government that just isn’t listening or working for them. It is time our leaders in Washington stop doing the bidding of corporations that send good-paying jobs overseas, and start looking out for average Americans who are struggling to make ends meet. Our workers deserve responsible trade policies, stable jobs and leaders in Washington who will put their best interests first.”
