Hagan on the Anniversary of the Beginning of World War II

September 1, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. – State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) today released the following statement on the anniversary of the beginning of World War II.

“On this day in 1939, World War II broke out when Hitler and the Nazis invaded Poland in an act of unprovoked aggression. Today, nearly 70 years later, we are continuing to face conflicts on the world stage – from the war in Iraq, to the recent invasion of Georgia by Russia, to continued tension with Iran. It is important, now more than ever, that we rebuild our moral authority, which was the hallmark of our country’s involvement in WWII, and reestablish our standing in the world.

Nearly seventy years ago, our soldiers showed bravery and courage fighting for a people they had largely never met, in a place they had largely never been, and when they returned home they were greeted by an America that kept their promises to them. Health care healed their wounds, and the GI Bill opened the door to a better future for them. We must work now to ensure that this generation of veterans and soldiers receives this same welcome and the care they deserve.”
