Kay Hagan on the Anniversary of North Carolina School Integration

September 4, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. – State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) today released the following statement to commemorate the four students who integrated the North Carolina school system on Sept. 4, 1957.

“Today, we honor the students and administrators from Greensboro, Winston-Salem and Charlotte who integrated North Carolina’s schools fifty-one years ago on this date. Their actions were truly heroic, and they changed the course of history for our entire country. They knew an education should be a right, not a privilege, and sought to change that for generations to come. This week, I have been talking about the importance of ensuring that all of our children receive a first-class education from pre-school to higher education so they can be prepared to enter a 21st Century workforce. Those individuals who integrated our schools over fifty years ago understood a lesson we should remember today – education is the gateway to more jobs, a better economy, and a brighter future.”
