Kay Hosts Women's Events with Lilly Ledbetter, Inspiration for the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act
Ms. Ledbetter will campaign with Kay in Charlotte, Salisbury, Greensboro
October 26, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. – State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) will be joined by Lilly Ledbetter on Monday for several events focusing on women’s issues. Lilly Ledbetter, the plaintiff in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and inspiration for the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, will be campaigning with Kay to talk about women’s issues and why the pay disparity between women and men is unacceptable in today’s world. Kay and Ms. Ledbetter will start the day in Charlotte with a Women’s Town Hall geared towards working women and the challenges they face. They will continue on to Salisbury for a women’s luncheon. Finally, Kay and Ms. Ledbetter will hold another Women’s Town Hall in Greensboro on the campus of Bennett College.
In April, Kay’s opponent, Elizabeth Dole, voted against the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act when it was before the Senate. The act would have ensured that victims of pay discrimination would be able to hold their employers accountable for each instance of discrimination under existing anti-discrimination laws, rather than being limited to just the first instance. Currently, women in North Carolina make 78 cents for every dollar men make for the same job.
