Less Than a Month before Election, Dole Remains Inaccessible to North Carolinians
October 8, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Another day, and another story about Dole’s inaccessibility to the people in North Carolina who elected her. Two weeks ago, the Winston-Salem Journal published an article detailing the number of days Dole spent in North Carolina during her six-year term, reporting that she spent only 13 days in North Carolina in 2006, and overall she has spent what amounts to 13% of her time in the state since being elected. It was reported today in the Raleigh News & Observer that Elizabeth Dole “quashed debates at every turn,” and turned down at least five statewide, televised proposals. The Dole campaign website still has no public events calendar, and less than a month before Election Day, North Carolinians largely read about her appearances in the state after-the-fact.
“Our country is in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis; North Carolinians are paying the highest price for gas in the country; healthcare costs are staggering; the ability to attend and afford college seems further out of reach; and we’re mired in two separate wars while our country’s moral authority is in shambles. Does Elizabeth Dole not think that her constituents may have one or two questions on their minds that they may want to ask her about?” said Hagan Campaign Communications Director Colleen Flanagan. “Her campaign to this point has been a study in avoiding voters at all costs, slinging mud rather than suggesting answers and relying on voters to re-elect her without giving them any good reasons to do so. Kay has been building on a strong record of serving her constituents by pounding the pavement for a year, talking to voters, making herself available and sharing her ideas to fix what’s broken in Washington. Times like these merit a workhorse, not a showhorse.”
