New NRSC Ad: The Only Blank Check in This Race Is the One Elizabeth Dole Gives President Bush
Every major newspaper endorsement has gone to Kay, citing Dole’s rubber-stamp for Bush and ineffectiveness for North Carolinians
October 23, 2008
Greensboro, NC- Becoming increasingly desperate with only 12 days left, the National Republican Senatorial Committee today released a new ad today attacking Kay for the way they believe she might vote as a U.S. Senator. The bigger problem? We know how their candidate, Elizabeth Dole has voted over the past 6 years, and it’s not with North Carolina. The only blank check in this race is the one Elizabeth Dole has given to President George Bush.
“Unfortunately for Senator Dole and the NRSC, Kay has been endorsed by every major daily newspaper in the state, all of which have pointed to Kay’s ability to invest in the right kind of change to move North Carolina forward toward the change we need,” said Hagan Campaign Communications Director Colleen Flanagan. “In these editorials, they also haven’t beaten around the Bush in describing Senator Dole’s lackluster performance and ineffectiveness on behalf of the people she represents.”
• The Charlotte Observer lamented that Dole’s “ineffectiveness in representing North Carolina is such a surprise and such a disappointment,” and, “She has been a voice for her party far more times than she has acted independently.”
• The Winston-Salem Journal said “Dole has reserved her best efforts for issues of importance to the national Republican Party and the Bush administration, not North Carolinians.”
• The Durham Herald-Sun wrote, “We can’t help but think [Dole] could have taken a more active role during her six years in the Senate.”
• The Asheville Citizen-Times said, “Dole has failed to translate her knowledge and experience into the kind of clout and activism that would make her a force in the Senate.”
• The Greensboro News-Record said Dole “has not gained as much influence in the Senate as her Washington experience should have earned for her, nor been as visible in North Carolina as she should have…”
Those same editorials, have praised Kay for her independence, energy, initiative and knowledge of North Carolina.
• The Raleigh News & Observer said, “Hagan…has worked in the banking field, is at ease with a variety of individuals and groups that represent the diversity of North Carolina,” and “has become an effective legislator with a broad vision of statewide issues.”
• The Asheville Citizen-Times said, “North Carolina needs and deserves a…knowledgeable, collaborative, but forceful voice in the U.S. Senate. We believe Kay Hagan promises to be such a voice.”
• The Charlotte Observer said, “North Carolina voters seek three key things from the people they send to the U.S. Senate: independent thinking, fierce advocacy for the state and tangible results. Those solid rules of thumb reflect the state’s non-nonsense values…we recommend Hagan. We believe she offers citizens the better hope of having an effective and independent voice in the Senate.”
• The Greensboro News-Record said, “With other area representatives of both parties, she won backing for state funding for transportation and marketing to improve the important furniture show.”
• The Winston-Salem Journal said, “Hagan’s election would give our state balanced representation in the Senate: one Democrat in what will likely be a Democratic-controlled chamber, and one Republican, incumbent Richard Burr. North Carolina needs that.”
• The Winston-Salem Chronicle said “Hagan is ready to work hard for us. She’s a fighter that will stand up against all forces to battle for all North Carolinians.”
