GREENSBORO, NC – State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate tonight, among a field of five candidates competing for the Democratic nomination. Kay credited her victory to her strong grass-roots support across the state and her message resonating with voters who believe that Washington is broken.

“I am overwhelmed by the support I have received from all corners of the state. I have had County and Campus Captains organizing phone banks and canvassing from Sylva to Wilmington and Boone to Windsor. I have had everyone from working parents to high school students volunteering in my office,” Kay said. “I could not have done this without each and every one of them, and their support will help carry us to victory in November.”

With the primary behind her, Kay is now squarely focused on defeating Elizabeth Dole in November and making Washington more accountable to North Carolinians who believe their interests are not being addressed. Yesterday, Real Clear Politics wrote that Kay may be this year’s Jim Webb, referring to the current U.S. Senator who was the underdog in his 2006 race against former Senator George Allen, a well-funded and powerful sitting Senator. A recent poll conducted by Research 2000 shows Kay only seven points behind Dole in a head-to-head matchup.

“This primary has allowed me to meet North Carolinians and begin a longer conversation with them about what they feel needs to be done to fix Washington, I’m proud that they have chosen me to take on Elizabeth Dole,” Kay said. “My campaign’s strategy has always been to run this race to ultimately defeat Elizabeth Dole, and I’m proud that we are one step closer while having kept the campaign clean and respectful of other Democrats in the process.

“Over the next six months, I’m looking forward to continuing my conversations with North Carolinians who believe, as I do, that they deserve better from their elected representatives in Washington,” Kay continued. “From affording to purchasing and keep a home, to affording health insurance for themselves and their loved ones; from sending their children to college to concerns about companies sending their jobs overseas; and from keeping our country safe while responsibly ending the war in Iraq to finally keeping our promises to our veterans, North Carolinians believe their voices are not being heard and their concerns are not being addressed. My campaign will be all about changing their perceptions of what their U.S. senator can do for them, and if they elect me, what their U.S. senator will do for them.”
