Statement of State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan on Juneteenth

“As I travel across the state of North Carolina, I have seen that the ways of the past are still evident in the conditions of people’s lives today. But there is a change that is sweeping this nation. While the seat I’m running for was once held by Jesse Helms, who opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act, I am proud to be running a campaign that is about taking the lessons learned from the past and using them to make a stronger future for us all. Juneteenth celebrates emancipation by lifting up and emphasizing two things I believe are essential to making a nation great and its people prosper —education and economic advancement. I look forward to working on behalf of North Carolinians who believe, as I do, that we need new leadership in Washington to provide a better future for our children.”
