Winston-Salem Journal Agrees: Budgets Kay Wrote Were "All Balanced, Responsible"
October 10, 2008
GREENSBORO, NC- In all three of the North Carolina newspaper endorsements offered thus far, the state’s leading daily newspapers have chosen to endorse State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) in her bid to unseat Elizabeth Dole. In every editorial endorsement, the papers talk about Kay’s financial acumen, her fiscal responsibility and her ability to steward the state budget through difficult times while investing in the right priorities.
Wrote the Winston-Salem Journal in their endorsement today, “Hagan, 55, is a bundle of brains and energy…The budgets she helped write were all balanced and responsible.” The Asheville Citizen-Times said of Kay, “The forcefulness and hard work that earned her the chairmanship of one of the most important Senate committees, her extensive knowledge of the state’s economic, educational and environmental needs and her proven record of being able to work with her fellow lawmakers to get things done would better serve North Carolina.” In the Greensboro News and Record, the editors wrote, “What she’s done in Raleigh, she’s ready to do in Washington…Her priorities include fiscal responsibility…and what she calls ‘a whole list of pocketbook issues.’” In addition, on Wednesday, the Raleigh News & Observer called the claim made in a current NRSC ad attacking Kay for her budgets “not accurate.”
“Every day it seems there’s a new attack ad by Elizabeth Dole or her Republican friends hitting Kay for her time as the chairman of the budget committee in the Senate,” said Hagan Campaign Communications Director Colleen Flanagan. “But the ads are not working, and Kay is ahead in the polls because people know Kay to be a responsible steward of their money, one who balanced the budget every year while investing in the right priorities to help move the state forward. Any claims to the contrary have been repeatedly called out for what they are – blatant lies and desperate attempts to help Elizabeth Dole hold on to her seat.”
