Hagan Statement on Primary Election Results
GREENSBORO – Kay Hagan released the following statement after tonight’s primary contests were decided:
“It is an honor to once again be selected as the nominee for United States Senate. For the past five years, I have worked tirelessly to seek out bipartisan, commonsense solutions for North Carolina’s middle class families, and I have focused on efforts to create jobs and grow the economy. With the help of people from Murphy to Manteo, my campaign will be working to reach North Carolinians to talk about my track record of results for our state and my pledge to continue putting North Carolina first.
“This election is a simple choice between two very different records. Thom Tillis has spent his time in Raleigh pushing a special interest agenda that has rigged the system against middle class families. Speaker Tillis cut public education by nearly $500 million, killed equal pay legislation, defunded Planned Parenthood, gutted unemployment insurance for 170,000 people and rejected health care for 500,000 North Carolinians. Speaker Tillis passed a tax plan that gave tax cuts to the wealthy, but he told our teachers they would have to go another year without a pay raise. This is not an agenda that works for working families, and his priorities are out of sync with our commonsense North Carolina values.
“North Carolinians know that I am the only candidate in this race who will put our state’s needs ahead of what the special interests want. As we say in our state toast, North Carolina is supposed to be a place ‘where the weak grow strong and the strong grow great.’ I still believe in this ideal, but it is on the line this year as Thom Tillis has abandoned this shared value. I am honored to serve North Carolina, but I know that this job is about the families working everyday for a better future. I will continue putting them, and North Carolina, first as we continue our work to make all North Carolina families strong and great.”
Earlier today, the Hagan campaign released a memo highlighting Thom Tillis’ biggest general election liabilities including his damaging legislative record, divisive and offensive comments and heavy ethical baggage. To read that memo, please click HERE.
